Dritz Snag Nab-It: A Needlepoint Project Bag Essential

There are needlepoint tools you use every day, and then there are the tiny tools you’re incredibly grateful to have the moment something goes wrong!

The Dritz Snag Nab-It is that tool.

If you’ve accidentally pulled a thread from the back of your needlepoint canvas through to the front, spotted a stubborn fiber poking through your stitches, or discovered a loose thread where it simply doesn’t belong, don’t immediately start ripping out stitches.

Why FROG when you can Snag Nab-It?

The Snag Nab-It uses a smooth pointed end and textured surface to help catch a loose fiber and pull it back through to the reverse side of your needlepoint canvas.

It’s saved more of my own projects than I’d like to admit, and it’s earned a permanent spot in my needlepoint project bag.

What Is a Snag Nab-It?

The Dritz Snag Nab-It is a compact metal snag-repair tool approximately 2.5 inches long.

One end has a fine point that can pass through fabric or needlepoint canvas. The other portion has a textured surface designed to catch a loose fiber as the tool passes through.

For needlepoint, that means a wayward thread sitting on the front of your canvas can often be gently brought back where it belongs: to the back of your work.

Needlepointers  know and recommend this tool for concealing stray ends and pulling random threads through to the back rather than cutting them.

How to Use a Snag Nab-It on Needlepoint

1. Find the stray thread.
Identify the loose fiber or snag on the front of your needlepoint canvas.

2. Insert the pointed end.
Pass the smooth pointed end through the canvas where you want the loose fiber to move toward the back.

3. Catch the thread.
As the textured section reaches the loose fiber, it helps grip the stray thread.

4. Pull gently.
Continue drawing the Snag Nab-It through to the reverse side of your canvas, allowing it to carry the loose fiber with it.

5. Adjust your stitches.
Once the thread is back where it belongs, gently arrange the surrounding stitches as necessary.  IYKYK...

Why Needlepoint Stitchers Love It

The Snag Nab-It solves a very specific and very frustrating needlepoint problem.

It can help when:

A thread from the back gets pulled through to the front.

A loose fiber appears between finished stitches.

A thread tail is sitting where you don’t want it.

You need a little extra help pulling a stray fiber through the canvas.

Instead of immediately cutting the fiber or frogging an entire area, reach for this little tool first!

Why FROG When You Can Snag Nab-It?

Every needlepointer eventually learns about frogging.

Rip it! Rip it!

Sometimes ripping stitches out is unavoidable. BUT if the stitches themselves are fine and the problem is simply one rogue thread on the front of your canvas, ripping everything out may not be your first move.

Try the Snag Nab-It!

It’s one of the least expensive tools in your project bag, and it may save some of your most expensive stitching time.

More Than a Needlepoint Tool

Although we consider the Snag Nab-It a needlepoint essential, Dritz designed it as a general snag-repair tool. It can also be used on knitted and woven fabrics, garments, upholstery and other appropriate textiles, but for me it lives in my needlepoint project bag!

That makes it a handy little tool to keep around even after your canvas comes off the stretcher bars.

A Note from AW Needlework

There aren’t many inexpensive tools we’d call a project saver, but this is one of them.

We’ve personally used the Snag Nab-It on our own needlepoint projects when a little thread suddenly appeared where it wasn’t supposed to be. It’s exactly why we carry them: every stitcher deserves one tucked inside their project bag before they actually need it!

The Snag Nab-It has a functional sharp point. Handle carefully, and store securely!
